Himachal: 17 panchayats in Lahaul-Spiti elected unopposed, each to get Rs 25 lakh reward

In a significant development ahead of the Panchayati Raj General Elections-2026, as many as 17 gram panchayats in the remote tribal district of Lahaul and Spiti have been elected unopposed, reflecting a rare consensus-driven electoral process in the high-altitude region.

According to sources, the uncontested elections were largely the result of mutual understanding among villagers and community leaders, aimed at avoiding electoral confrontation and ensuring smooth grassroots governance in the geographically challenging district.

Confirming the development, District Election Officer-cum-Deputy Commissioner Kiran Bhadana said of the 17 gram panchayats elected unanimously, nine belong to the Spiti subdivision and eight to the Lahaul subdivision.

In addition, 148 ward members out of 170 seats have also been elected unopposed, indicating a strong consensus at the village level. A Panchayat Samiti (BDC) member from Sissu has also been elected unchallenged.

According to information gathered by The Tribune, the gram panchayats elected unopposed in the Spiti subdivision include Dhankhar, Langza, Hal, Losar, Lara, Lalung, Demul, Tabo and Gyu. In the Lahaul subdivision, Koksar, Sissu, Shuling, Khangsar, Muling, Malang, Tandi and Kolong panchayats witnessed unanimous selection of representatives.

Administrative sources said the district administration views these uncontested elections as a model of democratic cooperation in remote rural areas, where social harmony often takes precedence over political rivalry.

The development assumes significance as Lahaul and Spiti, known for its sparse population and difficult terrain, has historically witnessed community-driven decision-making in matters of local governance.

DC Bhadana said each of the unopposed gram panchayats would receive Rs 25 lakh for developmental activities, including strengthening rural infrastructure and public facilities.

In another major initiative aimed at increasing women’s participation in the electoral process, the district administration will establish 20 Pink Polling Stations in the Lahaul region during the upcoming elections. These polling stations will be managed entirely by women staff members.

The initiative is aimed at creating a more comfortable, secure and encouraging environment for women voters in the tribal district, where accessibility and participation often remain challenging due to difficult terrain and weather conditions.
