The week-long celebration of International Nurses Week-2026 concluded here on Wednesday, at the Shivalik Institute of Nursing, Shimla, with a glittering function at which some nurses of the Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital (IGMC), were honoured for their dedicated services.
During the celebrations, nurses showcased their talents by participating in group dances, modelling and other cultural events, which were the highlights of the day.
The celebrations, held under the theme, “Our Nurses. Our Future. Caring for nurses strengthens economies,” also featured poster making competition, mehendi, face painting, hairdo, makeup, handwriting, rangoli, role play, dumb charades and declamation contest.
A fashion show and sports day was also held during the week. Shashi Kala Negi, nursing superintendent, IGMC, served as the chief guest on the occasion, who in her address said the week is celebrated around May 12, International Nurses Day, which is observed every year on world over to mark the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing.
The theme for this year aptly highlights the pivotal role nurses play in strengthening healthcare systems and safeguarding communities. She also appreciated the efforts of the students and faculty in organising the event.
In her valedictory address Dr Shama Louhmi Principal of the Institute, said “The focus of the theme this year underscores the important role of nurses who are the backbone of the healthcare system.
Working in hospitals, community settings, educational institutions or during public health emergencies, nurses remain at the forefront of patient care and help save lives.” she said.
Shobha Thakur, Managing Director of the Institute awarded the winners with prizes and congratulated all the nurses and student nurses on the occasion.
