Newly pregnant? Here are 5 tips for a healthy pregnancy

After one comes across the news of a positive pregnancy, all one can feel is happiness and excitement. Pregnancy is certainly the most beautiful period of a woman’s life. But, one has to be cautious to support a healthy pregnancy. The way you care for yourself early in pregnancy has a great impact on your baby’s development.

So, it is important to be careful and vigilant during the early pregnancy as lapse of care may lead to several complications like the risk of preterm delivery, development of asthma to complicate pregnancy, gestational diabetes etc.

So here is a list of dos and don`ts for pregnant ladies.

Eat healthy: It is very important to partake a healthy diet when you are pregnant. Make sure that you get all necessary nutrients in right proportions such as Vitamins A, C, E, omega-3 fatty acids, calcium and most importantly folic acid as it reduces the chances of preterm labour.

Ample sleep: Pregnancy often is associated with insomnia symptoms and poor sleep quality. But, it is important to take ample sleep as poor sleep quality can disrupt normal immune processes and lead to lower birth weights and other complications.

Avoid alcohol and smoking: Enjoy a glass of something refreshing and sparkly instead of alcohol as drinking during pregnancy can lower your baby’s IQ. Also, smoking during pregnancy can triple the baby`s chance of developing meningitis.

Yoga and meditation: Find time to stretch out with some yoga poses. Fifteen minutes of yoga can actually make you feel more relaxed, energised and stress free. It is important to keep your mind and body in a calm and relaxed state as it will help you sail smoothly through your pregnancy period.

Stay hydrated: Dehydration in pregnancy decreases the levels of amniotic fluid and may lead to fatigue and a feeling of nausea. So, drinking at least 7-8 glasses of water is a must. Also, dehydration during pregnancy can cause premature contractions.
