Tauni Devi: Where every Wish is fulfilled by Hitting a Stone

There is a 300 year old temple of Mata Tauni Devi on the Hamirpur-Awahdevi National Highway in Himachal Pradesh. This temple is famous for its unique belief.

It is believed that Mata Tauni Devi ensconced here could not hear, that’s why whenever the devotees who come here ask for a vow, they bump the stones kept there.

Devotees believe that by doing this their wishes are definitely fulfilled. Devotees from other states including Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Jammu Kashmir, and Uttar Pradesh reach to visit this famous temple of Mata.

Ancient Belief

There is a belief associated with Mata Tauni Devi Temple that 300 years ago the Mughals had captured Delhi. During this time the Mughals started torturing the Hindus. By taking off the sacred thread of Rajputs, they started converting their religion.

In such a situation, 12 brothers of the Chauhan dynasty had taken refuge in this hilly inaccessible area to protect their religion and family members. During this, their sister was also with them, who could not hear.

Coming here the head of the family planned to builda house on the center of Bakar Kunah and Pung Khad. When he laid the foundation stone of the building, there started a stream of blood.

When he told this to his family priest, the priest blamed the unmarried girl of the house for this. After listening to the priest, the women of the house accused the unmarried daughter of the house i.e. Tauni Devi.

On which Tauni Devi did severe penance at this place and disappeared on the 10th day of the month of Asadha. In her memory the brothers had established this temple here.

On the first floor, on one side there is a temple of Tauni Devi Mata, and on the other side there are Sai Baba, Baba Balaknath and Shani Dev temples. Large idols of Lord Shiva and Hanuman are also enshrined on the second floor of the temple.

There is a grand and beautiful park along with the temple. There is proper arrangement for the stay of devotees here. A large number of devotees reach here during Navratri and a feast (Bhandara) is also organized here.

How To Reach Mata Tauni Devi Temple

This temple is situated on the Hamirpur-Awahdevi National Highway. Devotees can reach this temple via Hamirpur. Tauni Devi Temple is about 13 kms from Hamirpur.

Hamirpur is connected by bus service to other major cities including Delhi, Amritsar, Dehradun, Haridwar, Ambala, Chandigarh.

The nearest railway station to Hamirpur is at Una, about 70 km away. The nearest airport to Hamirpur is the Gaggal Airport in Kangra, about 83 km away.
