Anurag contested the BJP seat of Hamirpur in the year 2008. Not only contested the election, but Anurag was also successful in this 14th Lok Sabha election.

After this, when the 16th Lok Sabha elections were held, he was declared the President of All India Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha along with winning.
