I would say that the best time to visit Shimla for snowfall would be from December to March as this is the ideal time to visit. In summers this is the best time to visit Shimla. Shimla has a small railway station which is just 1 kilometre away from the city centre and is connected to Kalka by a short gauge rail track.

Shimla’s famous toy train runs between Kalka and Shimla, it takes approximately 7 hours for this train to cover a distance of 96 km.

Kalka is the nearest railway station to Shimla, which is connected to Chandigarh and Delhi by regular trains. You can find trains to Kalka from major cities like Delhi and Chandigarh.

Reach Shimla By Airplane

If you are going to travel to Shimla by plane, then plane will land at  Jubbarhatti. It is about 23 km from Shimla which is the nearest airport to it.

There are several regular flights to Jubbarhatti from Chandigarh and Delhi. After reaching this airport, you can easily get a taxi to go to Shimla.

Reach Shimla By Car

If you are traveling from Delhi to Shimla by your own car, you will need to take the Outer Ring Road towards GT Karnal Road then turn right onto NH 1. After reaching Ambala you leave NH 1 and proceed to Kalka on NH 22.

Now continue on this route towards Solan and then towards Shimla. Usually this journey will take you 6 -7 hours.

With a driving distance of about 114 kilometres, commuting via road is one of the fastest and most convenient options for a tourist. On an average, traversing through the winding roads on the foothills of the Himalayas takes about 4 hours via NH5 from Chandigarh.

Reach Shimla by Bus

Traversing the 114 kilometres via bus takes about 5 hours (including the stoppages). With multiple buses running on this route, there are various options ranging from AC bus to Non AC busses. The top operator on the Chandigarh to Shimla bus route is HRTC.

Shimla is well connected by road to cities like Chandigarh at a distance of 117 kms, Manali 260 kms and Delhi 343 kms. Apart from Himachal Road Transport Corporation, many private buses also run from major cities of North India.

If you are going from Delhi to Shimla then you will find many luxury buses overnight from ISBT Kashmere Gate whereas if you are travelling from Chandigarh one can get busses from ISBT 43.
