Regular smokers have a higher risk of losing teeth

Washington D.C., Sept 15 (ANI): A new study has found that people who smoke regularly have a higher risk of losing their tooth.

The study conducted by University of Birmingham explained that male smokers are up to 3.6 times more likely to lose their teeth than non-smokers, whereas female smokers were found to be 2.5 times more likely.

Thomas Dietrich, the lead author professor, said that most teeth were lost because of caries i.e. tooth decay or chronic periodontitis i.e. gum disease, but smoking was a strong risk factor for periodontitis, that enables the higher rate of tooth loss in smokers.

The study also informed that smoking can mask gum bleeding, a key symptom of periodontitis, because of which the gums of a smoker can appear to be healthier than they actually are until it is quite far down the line.

Also, the link between smoking and tooth loss was stronger among younger people than in the older groups and heavy smokers had higher risk of losing their teeth than smokers who smoked fewer cigarettes.

On a positive note, the research highlighted that quitting smoking can reduce the risk fairly quickly, although an ex-smoker would have the same risk for tooth loss as someone who had never smoked.

The study is published in the Journal of Dental Research. (ANI)

Kalka-Shimla toy train remains favourite with foreigners

Saturday’s accident that killed two foreigners on board the Charter Special Toy Train at the Kalka-Shimla heritage railway track has failed to deter tourists.

Terming it a routine accident, a few travellers on board the Kalka-Shimla Toy Train today said since no mechanical defect had been detected, there was no need to panic or fear.

On their maiden visit to Shimla, UK-based couple Dyug and Sara said the panoramic view offered by the mountainous track amid the narrow gauge was akin to the railway tracks in the UK. They said they were keen on seeing the ancient architecture.

“We had planned a visit to Shimla before the accident. The mishap has not affected our travel plans,” said Dyug, adding that she wanted to see the bridges and tunnels along the track as those were listed on the world heritage map by UNESCO.

The couple said they loved travelling by train and since media reports had pointed towards human error, such journeys posed no threat.
Going to Shimla for an interview, Ayushman, a student from Noida, said the thrill of travelling through a narrow gauge had made him opt for the journey.
He said he didn’t feel like going by road as the accident had not occurred due to a mechanical defect.

Five toy trains move uphill and downhill on a daily basis on the track. Foreigners often travel on the route.

“The train witnesses heavy rush during the peak tourist season,” said railway officials.

Vishvajeet, a government official, said since charter trains were different from toy trains, chances of such mishaps were more.

A group of youngsters from Hisar and Mahendergarh in Haryana appeared nonchalant about the accident. They said mistakes could be rectified and toy train journeys were safe.

With people, including elderly women, routinely boarding and alighting from the toy trains at various stations like Dharampur, Barog, Solan and Kandaghat, there appears to be no impact of the Saturday’s toy train accident. The exact cause of the accident is yet to be ascertained, but it seems that passengers have already given a clean chit to the railway staff.

Diabetes drugs substantially increase risk of bone fractures

Washington D.C., Sept. 9 (ANI): A new study has revealed that diabetes drug boosts bone fat and fracture risk and exercise can partially counterbalance the effect.

First author Maya Styner said that these drugs weren’t first or second-line choices of treatment for type-2 diabetes but some patients do take them, adding that the doctors and patients need to better understand the relationship between diabetes, certain drugs and the often dramatic effect on bone health.

According to the study, rosiglitazone affects bone fat by enhancing a critical transcription factor called PPAR – peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor – which regulates the expression of specific genes in the nuclei of cells. Essentially, rosiglitazone takes glucose out of blood to lower blood sugar and treat diabetes. But that glucose is then packaged into lipid droplets – fat.

Styner said that many of her patients have been surprised to learn that some diabetes drugs can adversely affect bone health. She also said that diabetes itself can harm bones.

She said that more bone fat means less actual bone, which increases the risk of bone fractures and added that exercise might trigger marrow stem cells to create more bone cells instead of fat cells.

In the study, Styner’s team added a running wheel to mouse cages. They measured the effects of running. Even on a high dose of a power drug, such as rosiglitazone, the mice that exercised showed a significant decrease in bone fat.

Styner further added that she would still advise patients at risk of declining bone health to find an exercise that suits them.

The study is published is the Journal Endocrinology. (ANI).

Can vitamin C supplement replace morning walk?

New York
If you are too lazy to wake up for your morning walk, results of a new study may cheer you up. Researchers have found that taking Vitamin C supplements daily can have similar cardiovascular benefits as regular exercise in overweight and obese adults.

The blood vessels of overweight and obese adults have elevated activity of the small vessel-constricting protein called endothelin (ET)-1.

Because of the high ET-1 activity, these vessels are more prone to constricting, becoming less responsive to blood flow demand and increasing risk of developing vascular disease.

Exercise has been shown to reduce ET-1 activity but incorporating an exercise regimen into a daily routine can be challenging.

This study, conducted at University of Colorado, Boulder in the US, examined whether vitamin C supplements, which have been reported to improve vessel function, can also lower ET-1 activity.

The researchers found that daily supplementation of Vitamin C (500 mg/day) reduced ET-1-related vessel constriction as much as walking for exercise did.

Vitamin C supplementation represents an effective lifestyle strategy for reducing ET-1-mediated vessel constriction in overweight and obese adults, the researchers wrote.

The findings were presented at the 14th International Conference on Endothelin: Physiology, Pathophysiology and Therapeutics in Savannah, Georgia, US.—IANS

At the feet of Goddess Haateshwari

Shriniwas Joshi
It was already dark when we reached Rohru on our journey back from Dodra-Kwar. We decided to spend the night at Rohru and had, perforce, to stay in one of the dirtiest private hotels as the tourism corporation hotel and the Circuit/Rest House were fully occupied. Luckily, the beds were clean and we were tired, so we slept well.

The next morning, we decided to pay obeisance to Goddess Mahishasuramardini at Haatkoti. It is only 14 kilometre from Rohru. Haatkoti has now a big, good-looking serai which also has deluxe rooms. I felt sorry for not coming to this place last night and gamble on taking chances of staying here.

Haatkoti, a small village, is situated on the bank of the Pabbar river and has a number of stone sikhara temples. On the flat top of the adjacent hillock is the main temple of Lankra Veer with two more temples of other deities. Lankra Veer is Pataal Bhairav and protects the people from all negative powers that dwell in the surroundings of his temple. He is said to have been originated from the hair of Lord Shiva.

I am not showing you the picture of the temple of Goddess Mahishasuramardini or that of Lord Shiva, the main temples at Haatkoti because these are published in all books on the temples of Himachal Pradesh. Experts believe that the temples were constructed in the 9th-10th centuries to be rejuvenated by Maharaja Padam Chandra of Jubbal in 1885. The temple complex today is covered under The Himachal Pradesh Hindu Public Religious Institutions and Charitable Endowments Act, 1984 and is being properly maintained which is a pleasure to a visiting eye.

The devi has been shown here with eight hands standing in the Prayogmudra style. Prayogmudra means that she is ready to use her chakra or discus any moment. Her face is so serene and calm that a mere glance of it rouses total devotion towards her. I bow to the craftsman who carved the ashtdhatu (eight metals) idol about 7th century and put soul into her. Isn’t there a mismatch that the temple building is of the 9th century and the idol was crafted in the 7th century? Actually, the present temple has been constructed over the remains of an earlier temple situated here.

I was pleased to see five small shrines raised with stones standing in a row within the complex (See photo). The reason for my pleasure was that their architecture appeared more dated than the main two temples and second, my almost confirmed hindsight that the architecture of original temple of Ma Haateshwari might have been as that of these shrines. These shrines, which have no idol to worship, are five in number so I guessed that these had association with the Pandavas. And I was right because the locals believed that these were constructed by the Pandavas themselves during exile. They call these as Pandavas ka Khilona (toy-houses). A peep inside the toy houses shows sculpted images of gods and goddesses lying in no regularity.

I saw a big copper vessel, called Charu, chained to the temple of Ma Haateshwari (See photo). The legend is that long ago, a priest was sleeping in the temple when he heard a resounding rumble of vessels. He got up in torrential rain and proceeded towards the Pabbar to see two huge copper vessels floating in the river. He rescued both and brought those to the temple and during another heavy rain, one of the vessels floated and sailed in the river never to return. It brought the shadow of bad luck to the village of Haatkoti – there were untimely deaths, crop damages, droughts and other calamities.
Since then the second vessel has been chained so as not to lose it and people are in the lookout of the first and believe that if that is found, then there will be greater peace, prosperity and opulence in their village.
