Gujjars – The Gypsies of the Himalayas

Gujjars---The-Gypsies-of-the-Himalayas

Taken from the book The Splendour of Himalayan Art and Culture By Dr. Ashok Jerath – Buy this Book

It is really a feast for the eyes to see the flocks of cattle sheep, goats, cows, and buffaloes trotting by the roadside escorted by some ferocious dogs to the tune of the whistles of their masters.

Masters are elegantly clad with beautifully embroidered garments. These are the gypsies of the Himalayas, popularly known as Gujjars who are always on the move.

Several books on the cultural heritage of Gujjars have been published so far but their place of origin is not established yet.

Most historians stress upon the fact that they came from Middle Asia and reached India in search of green pastures and meadows.

Some of the researchers believe them to be a section of the valiant clan of the Huns while others claim them to be true Aryans who established their colonies in the northern part of this country spreading up to the plains of the Ganges.

Gujjars-The-Gypsies-of-the-Himalayas

Gujjars have been mentioned in several epics and in a number of classic books with myriad noun forms-Gujjar, Gujar, Goojar, Goojjar, etc. In Harshcharita by Bhan Bhat, there is a reference that during the reign of Prabhakar Vardhan there were some powerful domains of Gujjars.

We find mention of these Gujjars in the diaries of foreign travelers that there were several powerful kings of Gujjars who used to assist the more powerful kingdoms and thus were the deciding factors in tilting the power from one kingdom to another.

There are still some Gujjar settlements in several middle east countries which point to the fact that once they were settled there and established their kingdoms.

Several such families are still there in the ravines and at the base of Hindukush which speak the Gojary language similar to that of the language spoken by the Gujjars of this part of the world.

Gujjars reside in several cities and the localities of Attak, Peshawar, Jhelum, Rawal Pindi, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Lahore, etc. in Pakistan.

They believe in Islam. Gujjars living in India are having secular outlook. Most of the clans of Gujjars living in U.P., Gujarat, M.P., Haryana, etc. are Hindus but those who go about the Himalayas along with their flocks are the believers of Islam.

Most of their castes are the same as those of Rajputs Chauhans, Khatana, Kasana, etc. Most of them have been converted long ago. There are three distinct clans of Gujjars.

Those who are permanent settlers in the rural or suburban area depend upon cultivation though a few of them are educated and are in service.

Those who rear the cattle, especially buffaloes and depend upon selling their milk are Dodis. They are the most handsome Gujjars, the Image By DR B C Khanna representatives of the real Aryans.

Gujjars-The-Gypsies-of-the-Himalayas-1

The third clan of the Gujjars is of nomadic nature. They are the Bakarwals who are always on the move. They rear sheep and goats the flocks of which move during the changing seasons along the roadsides and in the pastures and meadows.

It is really a feast for the eyes to see thousands of sheep and goats escorted by Gaddi dogs which hound the animal in their fold whenever there is a trespass. They are the guards of the flocks and understand the language of their masters.

Bakarwals are always on the move. During summer months they move from the plains to the Himalayas, especially to the valleys in Zanskar ranges where they get huge pastures stretched miles together.

Gumery and Dras, the coldest parts of Ladakh are rich in greenery during acute summers. At the start of winter, they start moving towards lesser heights and plains. Thus right from the base of the Shivaliks to the highland valleys of Ladakh is the domain of these nomads.

In addition to their flock of sheep and goats, they carry with them ponies and horses on the backs of which household goods are kept. They include tents, utensils, clothes for daily use, and other articles of use in travel.

In fact, all their assets are carried on horseback. Wherever there is a place to spend the night they settle down and form a dera with open tents to accommodate the family members. They may stay there for more than a day provided there is enough greenery for their flock.

Social Milieu

These nomads are hardworking people. The male members of the clan are tall having broad shoulders with cute cuts.

They are having open milky visages, however, a few of them are dark in color too. The elders are bearded. They wear long shirts and salwars of dark colors.

Jackets of black or dark color are always in use but pattu coat is in vogue during winter only. They use white turban in the style of Turks.

Big leather shoes are in vogue and are nailed heavily at the soles. The females are thin and tall. Their attire is almost similar to that of their male counterparts.

They are very fond of braiding their hair. Numerous small braids divergently appear from the upper part of the forehead and convergently slide down to a single braid of hair at the back.

They usually wear a dark-colored cap on their head covering the turning point of the braids. They carry their younger kids on their backs in cloth cradles fastened around their backs.

Sometimes young lambs are also cradled. Newly born lambs are always carried on the backs to lure the sheep mothers. The free hands are always busy prompting the young lambs to move ahead and the ‘mother sheep’ to follow.

Bakarwals are experts in whistling the tune which is understood by the sheep, goats, and the dogs. They change the direction of their journey with the tune of the whistle of their masters.

However, there are some naughty animals that do not pay heed to these whistles. These animals are controlled by the hounds. They are hounded back by the big canines.

Of course, dogs are the most disciplined animals of the whole lot. Most of the work of these people is done by these dogs. During the night halt, the newly born lambs are set free so that their mothers take charge of them and suckle their young ones.

Gujjars---The-Gypsies-of-the-Himalayas-1

Dogs are let free to guard the whole flock and they are always alert to push back any intruder whosoever it may be; even the beasts are tom apart if they happen to attack the herd.

Women folk at once start making the dera look like a house. The kitchen is made in the open unless there is rain when they try to get shelter under the protruding rock or in a natural cave they get on their way.

The hearth for cooking the meals is always in open, arranged temporarily with stones; twigs of wood are used to lit the fire. They are fond of maize bread which is prepared from flour made out of powdering the maize grains.

Vegetables especially the green leaves of various herbs, potatoes, and sometimes dal and curry are also used with a bit of chilli and raw onion.

They are also fond of mutton. Ghee and shakkar are their best delicacies. While the ladies prepare the food, menfolk enjoy on hookah or gossip near the hearth to get the warmth during the winter season.

They lit torches during the night to shun away the wild animals. The next morning they pack their luggage on the backs of horses and ponies and start for the next halt.

The process goes on until they reach the green pastures where they stay for a pretty long time until they feel that their flock has taken enough. The rituals and other celebrations are very simple.

Almost every celebration starts with the distribution of ghee and shakkar among the poor and the kith and kin followed by the chanting of folk songs. At the time of new births and also during marriage ceremonies hilarious folk songs are chanted.

They are generally the love epics popularly known as Masnavis. Thus Masnavis like Saifal Malook, Heer Ranja, Laila Majnu, etc. are recited accompanied by folk music instruments like bagpipe, algoja, mattian, flute, and drums.

Marriages are very simple. They are ceremonised without any vanity or show. The marriage procession comprises of horse riders. After the ceremony is over the bride is brought on the back of a horse.

Marriage parties are received with ghee and shakkar distributed among all the persons accompanying the barat. They are given a feast of delicious food including sweets, rice with several types of curries, mutton, and fruits.

Generally, the marriages are arranged by the family members but sometimes there may be mutually agreed marriages between the bride and the bridegroom.

Occasionally, there may be a number of young lads opting for the most beautiful girl of the clan. When there is a competition, the cattle are offered in lieu to the parents of the girl.

The bidder giving the highest bid wins the battle, of course, the will of the ‘girl is always sought by the mother of the girl confidentially.

Once it so happened that a young Bakarwal gave away his whole herd of animals only to get the hand of a beautiful damsel. Other members of the community offered him some animals in gifts and to some extent, he was compensated.

Gujjars---The-Gypsies-of-the-Himalayas

Marriages are conducted by the priests of the mosques generally in Niquah style. Both sides are asked about their consent followed by the recitation of Ayats from Quran Sharif.

The Bakarwals are scholars of nature. They know the seasonal flowering, grasses, and medicinal herbs of various kinds. They are the doctors of their herd and apply medicinal herbs to the cattle’s whenever they are sick.

Some of the Bakarwals collect medicinal herbs during their travels which are sold in the market at a handsome price. Milk, curd, butter, ghee, etc are the ingredients sold by these nomads to make their both ends meet.

They also sell raw wool which is cut once a year in the case of ordinary sheep but twice in the case of the Australian breed which they rear now.

The cutting of wool generally takes place in the summer months. They are rich people having thousands of animals in their herds.

Nowadays they have opened their accounts in the banks also and a few of the rich parties possess lockers too. Since they are always on the move their children cannot study in traditional schools.

Considering the fact J&K Govt. has introduced the process of mobile schools. Teachers especially Gujjars and Bakarwals are arranged to move along with the caravan of herds.

They are mobile schools. Teachers selected for these schools are the educated Gujjars and Bakarwals.

Democratic Set-up

Bakarwals always move in groups. A single Kabila may consist of several families together. Each family used to have a head of family and all of these heads combine together to elect their leader.

Gujjars-The-Gypsies-of-the-Himalayas-2

Generally, it is unanimously decided and the most active one or the most powerful and rich is elected to perform the duties of a leader. This headman of the herds is popularly known as Mukadam.

These Mukadams were, once upon a time, the most powerful persons who used to decide the fates of the feudal lords. Even now they play an important role in deciding the trend in the general elections in the area.

All the quarrels of the families are settled by these headmen of the clan. Even the major disputes between the clans are solved mutually among themselves.

The deciding person used to be the Mukadam whose verdict is supposed to be final. Bakarwals seldom go to courts for getting justice. It is only when they are forced that they knock on the doors of the courts.

Generally, these disputes are extra-territorial, i.e. they do not concern with the clans only but the state is also involved. Then the Mukadams are helpless and they have no option but to go to courts for the cause of justice.

Generally, these cases are against the forest department and revenue department. Such disputes arise when they are not allowed to graze their cattles in a particular locality.

These people are fed up with these legalities as they are so prolonged that it becomes rather impossible to have justice in a few sittings. So they try to avoid such proceedings.

’10 out of 14 Villages Agreed to give Land for Gagal Airport-Government will Settle 1446 Families’

Feasibility report Gaggal airport expansion rejected

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu on Thursday told the state assembly that 1446 families from 14 villages would be affected by the expansion of Gaggal airport, for whose rehabilitation a suitable rehabilitation package would be provided and compensation would also be provided.

CM Sukhu was replying to questions raised by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members Vipin Singh Parmar, Pawan Kumar Kajal, Congress members Chaitanya Sharma and Sudhir Sharma during the Question Hour.

He said that the Gaggal airport in Kangra district is being expanded to accommodate larger aircraft and the techno-feasibility study has shown that it can be expanded by acquiring more area.

Out of the 14 villages proposed to be acquired for this purpose, people of 10 villages are ready to give their agricultural land for the airport.

The Chief Minister said that many people of the four villages, who are worried about ruining their economy and livelihood, should be consulted to address their concern.

He said, “The government does not want to displace any family and will come out with a rehabilitation plan for the affected families. No one will be rendered homeless by the construction of airports.”

BJP members said that the government should give a proper solution to the affected families and make changes in the airport expansion plan to reduce the displacement of the affected people.

14 villages agree to give land for Gagal airport

Former Chief Minister Jairam Thakur said that for the expansion of Gaggal airport, the government should compensate the market cost by a factor of two.

Vipin Parmar said that a provision of Rs 1500 crore was made for land acquisition during the Jairam Thakur government, out of which Rs 1000 crore was allocated for land acquisition in Mandi and Rs 500 crore for Gaggal airport.

BJP members said that the government should speed up the process of construction of the airport.

The Chief Minister said, “The state government wants both the airports to be constructed soon to accommodate larger aircraft.

Previous governments tried to expand airports in the state to promote air transport and tourism activities but unfortunately could not complete the major airport work in five years.

My government will try to complete all the necessary process for the expansion of the airport, for which the opposition members should also help the government.

He said that some people are demanding adequate compensation and others want land for their rehabilitation along with compensation.

Proper package will be given for the rehabilitation of the affected families before the construction of the airport.

The Chief Minister, replying to a supplementary question on the issue, asked the member whether he was interested in expanding the airport or not.

He said that the previous government had announced Rs 1000 crore for Mandi and Rs 500 crore for Gaggal airport but the money was yet to be released by the Center for land acquisition.

CM Sukhu said that the official process of acquisition of the airport was not done by the previous government, however, after coming to power recently, the Congress government not only completed the government work of land acquisition but also carried out the socio-economic impact assessment. He said that the Congress government got the SEIA of Green Field Mandi done.

Congress will run ‘Khula Darbar’ (Open Court) Program to Redress Public Grievances Instead of ‘Jan Manch’: CM

New selection commission will be formed in Hamirpur within three months

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu on Wednesday said that the Congress government has decided to replace BJP’s flagship program ‘Jan Manch’ with a new Jan Grievance Scheme to reach the doorsteps of common people.

CM Sukhu gave this information in response to a question by Congress member Yadvinder Goma during the question hour during the budget session of the state assembly.

Rejecting the demand for continuation of the Jan Manch program launched by the BJP in 2018, the Chief Minister said his government did not need to learn from the previous government how to run an efficient scheme to reach out to the common people.

Rejecting the constant interference of Leader of Opposition in the Assembly, Jairam Thakur, the Chief Minister said that the former Chief Minister was pressurizing the present government to continue with its old scheme Jan Manch, but the BJP government was no longer in power and the Congress government was taking forward their plans not inclined to increase.

Earlier, in response to a question, Rural Development Minister Anirudh Singh said that the previous government spent Rs 534.38 lakh on the Janmanch scheme.

He said that the Congress government would run an ‘open court’ program to listen to public grievances and redress them.

Earlier, opposing the answer given by the Chief Minister, all the MLAs of the opposition party reached the middle of the House and started protesting against this decision.

The opposition took part in the proceedings of the House after the Question Hour. Jairam Thakur said that the Congress government should take forward this flagship program in public interest.

He said that the concerned minister has also agreed in his reply that 43,821 public interest problems were resolved in Jan Manch.

Accusing the present government of playing politics, Jairam Thakur said that people were wandering from door to door seeking solution to their problems as no such program was available in the State.

The project director of National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) Mandi has informed about this by writing a letter to the Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi may inaugurate the project and Union Transport Minister Gadkari can also be present with him. However, it will take time to decide on the inauguration schedule.

Who will come for the inauguration will be decided only after the official confirmation from the Union Ministry. 6.5 percent of construction work on tunnels and bridges is left in the project.

After the completion of the project, it will take just 50 minutes to reach Bhawana in Sundernagar from Garamora instead of three and a half hours, and will also get rid of jam.

Kiratpur-Nerchowk fourlane will be ready on May 15

Double Lane will be made here

The special thing is that due to the intervening of the rail line between Zakatkhana and Mandi Bharari, a double lane will be made here. Two toll plazas in Four-lane have been built at Baloh in Bilaspur and Baura in Punjab.

The construction of the four-lane cost more than 4,200 crores and took 10 years to complete. With the introduction of the Kiratpur-Nerchowk four-lane, it will take four hours to reach Manali from Chandigarh instead of eight.

At the same time, the people of Kullu, Hamirpur, and Mandi will also be benefitted. On the other hand, work on two phases of the Nerchowk-Manali four-laning has been completed, and work on the third is underway.

Presently the distance from Kiratpur to Nerchowk is 114 km, but with the formation of a four-lane, the distance will be reduced to 77 km. For beautification, 36,235 saplings will be planted on both sides of the divider.

Maa Nayana Devi Temple, Gobind Sagar Lake, and AIIMS will be easy to reach

Four-lane will make it easy to reach Maa Nayana Devi’s temple, Gobind Sagar Lake, and AIIMS Bilaspur.

With the completion of the project, where tourism will get a boost in the state, it is also important from a strategic point of view. This four-lane leading to Manali will be helpful for the army. It will be easy for the army to reach Ladakh.

Hamirpur,-Sujanpur,-Murli-Manohar-Temple

There is such a unique Murli Manohar temple of Lord Shri Krishna at Sujanpur in Hamirpur district of Himachal Pradesh, where flute is installed in the opposite direction to its idol.

Raja Sansar Chand of the Katoch dynasty had established the Murli Manohar Temple about 400 years ago, which is still the center of faith among the devotees.

A national level Holi fair is also organized here in which a large number of devotees reach the temple premises. There are many secrets hidden in this temple, no one knows their reality, but a story about the construction of the temple is still famous, which we are sharing with you.

Hamirpur,-Sujanpur,-Murli-Manohar-Temple,

A legend is prevalent in the temple about the flute placed in the opposite direction in the idol of Lord Krishna.

At the time when the idol of Lord Krishna was being installed in the temple, Maharaja Sansar Chand questioned the priests about the installation of the idol of Lord Shri Krishna in the temple premises and if the answer was not satisfactory, all the priests were to be beheaded.

Hearing the Maharaja’s question, the priests kept awake all night to find the answer, when the priests went to the temple in the morning, they found that the flute in the idol was in the right direction in the evening, but by the morning it itself turned in the opposite direction. They gave proof of the presence of Lord Krishna here to the Maharaja.

Ravi Awasthi, the head priest of the royal family of Katoch dynasty, told that the idol of Lord Shri Krishna in Murli Manohar temple is the only idol in the whole world, in which the flute is facing in the opposite direction.

It is said that the wishes of the devotees coming here are fulfilled since the time the temple was built because of which, even after so many years, this temple remains an attraction for devotees and tourists coming from far and wide.

This temple was built about 400 years ago by Maharaja Sansar Chand with a sum of one lakh rupees.

National level Holi festival is celebrated in the temple

Holi fair has been organized in Murli Manohar temple since Katoch dynasty itself. It was started by applying gulal to Lord Shri Krishna and Radha.

This tradition continues even after almost 400 years have passed. At present, the national level Holi is inaugurated by the CM here after duly worshiping.

Electricity will Cost Rs 1.90 Paise in Himachal, Electricity Board has Proposed to Increase it by 90 Paise

Electricity may become expensive in Himachal from April 1

There can be a big jump in electricity bills from the month of April. The Commission’s approval is going to be taken soon on the proposal of the Electricity Board to increase the rates by 90 paise per unit.

Along with this, the commission is also keeping an eye on the changes that will happen after the imposition of water cess.

There is a possibility of a minimum increase of Rs 1 in electricity rates due to water cess. If the state government bears the cost of the boom in the form of a subsidy, the consumers will not be burdened.

But if the state government is unable to decide on the subsidy in that case, the consumers will have to compensate for it and in this situation, the rate of electricity will increase by Rs 1.90 a tremendous jump. This will be the highest-ever increase in electricity bills.

However, correspondence is going on between the government and the Electricity Regulatory Commission to control this increase.

Significantly, the state government has made preparations to impose water cess through the Jal Shakti Department. This bill has been approved in the assembly after necessary amendments.

Electricity will cost Rs 1.90 paise in Himachal

Water cess will be imposed on 172 power projects in the state and the state government has set a target of earning Rs 4,000 crore through cess from these projects.

The government has fixed a water cess of 10 to 50 paise per cubic meter. Along with this levy of cess, the crisis now remains regarding the purchase of electricity from power projects.

During the public hearing held by the Electricity Regulatory Commission, electricity consumers have called for not increasing the tariff. – hdm

The current tariff of the electricity board is 5.05 paise per unit from 126 units to 300. Out of this, the government gives Rs 1.10 as a subsidy. That is, the consumer has to pay Rs 3.95 per unit.

Now if 90 paise electricity board suggestion and Re 1 water cess are also added to this, then the rate of electricity in Himachal will be Rs 6.95 after 126 units.

Now it remains to be seen what the state government decides on subsidy in the new tariff from April. If the state government increases the existing subsidy which is Rs 1.10, then the impact on the consumers will be less.

Tariff for commercial consumers has been fixed at Rs 4.90 up to 20 KVA and Rs 5.05 up to 100 KV. In these, the government is giving a 0.20 paise subsidy.
